Virgin Media Basic TV Package | What’s in the jackpot?
By Emma Lunn | Tuesday, February 9, 2021
If you want to take advantage of the latest technology from Virgin Media, in the form of their next generation 360 TV set-top box, you will unfortunately have to go for a broadband and TV package. This new set-top box technology needs to be plugged in, which means it will need a Virgin Media broadband connection. And the most basic combination of TV and broadband that Virgin offers is its Big Bundle.
The Big Bundle basically includes Virgin’s M50 broadband, a landline with weekend landline calls included, and their Mixit TV offering – delivered via a Virgin TV 360 set-top box.
Big Bundle overview
The Big Bundle is essentially the “gateway package” for Virgin Media TV and broadband. Quite simply, it’s the cheapest way to access Virgin Media TV, broadband, and phone services, all bundled together. You will get the M50 broadband, which with an average download speed of 56 Mbps is still pretty respectable and naturally comes with unlimited downloads. But to focus on the TV side, you’ll get Virgin Media’s Mixit TV with over 100 channels, plus catch-up services and a host of apps.
You also get the Virgin TV Go app which lets you stream your favorite shows to your mobile or tablet, at home or on the go, anywhere there is wi-fi, 3G, 4G or 5G in the UK. .
And to top it off, you can even make free calls to landlines all weekend.

What channels can I get with Mixit TV?
At the time of this writing, you are getting around 112 channels including Freeview channels. You also get all the free catch-up players including BBC iPlayer, All4, YouTube, Vevo, Challenge, and more. If you subscribe to Netflix or Prime, you can also watch them on your TV.
Why are we a little vague on the exact number of channels you get? Well, because Virgin is a little vague on that too. You’ll notice that their website never gives the exact number of channels you get with a plan. You will see a lot of “over XX” and “up to XX” strings. Indeed, channel programs are subject to regional variations. For example, ITV HD is not available where STV HD or UTV HD is available.
Anyway, back to Mixit TV from the Big Bundle. In addition to Freeview and Catch Up, there are over 60 entertainment channels, four factual and lifestyle channels, six kids channels, four music channels, six movies, and two sports. It sounds great but, like with Freeview, many channels are HD or +1 versions of other channels.
Entertainment channels include Sky One, Sky Arts, Sky Witness, Sky Crime and Sky Comedy, Comedy Central and Fox. The two sports channels are Sky Sports News, Sky Sports Racing and Freesports HD.
If you want to be more educated, factual channels include PBS Ameria and The Food Network. And if you need your TV to babysit your kids, you can keep them busy with CBBC, CITV, Pop, Pop Power, and Tiny Pop.
Music fans can tune into the Four Music or NOW channels, and moviegoers will enjoy Film 4, Sony Movies Classics and Action and Talking Pictures. However, if you want to watch recent blockbusters, you’ll either need to upgrade to a more expensive package, add Sky Cinema, or pay per movie on Virgin Movies On Demand.
One downside to all Virgin Media TV packages is that you can’t get Sky Atlantic – so you’ll miss the next season of Succession as well as shows like Westworld, True Detective, and Billions. Sky seems to keep this channel for its own customers, which makes it a unique selling point.

Virgin TV 360 decoder
Virgin is pretty proud of their latest TV box, and rightly so – it’s their fastest, most stylish set-top box yet and comes with a fresh, completely new interface. Virgin likes to think of their new Guide as a “sherpa sofa,” helping you navigate and, most importantly, saving you time. And the interface is exactly the same whether you’re watching TV or using TV Go on your mobile or tablet. Plus, the new remote is now fully voice-activated, so, in theory at least, you should just be able to say it and then see it.
Naturally, the 360 TV is ready for Ultra HD viewing and it will even let you set up profiles for each member of the family, meaning everyone can jump straight to their own channels or just pick up where they left off. . It’ll give you up to a month of catch-up – and it’s easy to add 4k-capable 360 mini-boxes, which means you can watch anywhere in the house.
When you sign up with Virgin, you rent the 360 TV instead of buying it. This means that you will have to return it once your contract is over. But on the bright side, Virgin will fix it if it breaks down.
You will need an HDTV for the 360 TV to work and the box will connect to your TV using an HDMI cable (which Virgin will send to you). But if your television is not an HD or “HD Ready” television, it will not have an HDMI port and you will not be able to connect the box. You can either install your 360 TV box yourself using the QuickStart option or pay an engineer to do it for you (we did it ourselves and rate it ‘easy to medium’ with swear words) occasional but not complete fusion).
Virgin also lets you watch streaming services like Netflix and Prime through its box – assuming you subscribe – so you no longer have to plug your laptop into TV or watch Netflix on a computer screen.
Catch-up TV on Virgin Media
With Catch Up, there is no longer any reason to miss an epic TV moment. To see which shows will be available for catch-up, look in your TV guide for programs with the catch-up symbol (the letter “c” surrounded by a semicircle with an arrow).
To find catch-up shows, press “home” on your remote and choose “catch up” from the menu. These programs are not stored on the 360 TV, so you will need to be connected to the Internet to watch them.
How the Virgin TV 360 box makes your life easier
The TV 360 offers many additional features to make your life easier. The search function is easy to use, allowing you to find catch-up shows or those you have recorded. You can also customize your channel guide just to include your favorites (no reality channels for me, please).
Like the TiVo, Virgin’s 360 TV box will give you recommendations based on your profile viewing habits and record shows it thinks you’ll like. Virgin TV Series Link + brings every episode of your favorite shows together in one place.
The “delete” button allows you to delete anything from a single show to an entire folder; and if you delete items by mistake, the “restore” function allows you to recover them.
Parental controls can prevent young family members from viewing inappropriate content – don’t forget your PIN code or you can’t watch it either. Your PIN code is also required to purchase content on demand.
If you lose your remote (heaven forbid), press and hold the “channel up” button on your Virgin TV 360 box and your remote will beep from the side of the couch or wherever it’s hidden.
TV 360 lets you record shows, actors, and even directors, every time they’re on TV. So you will never miss a program with Tom Hardy / Margot Robbie (the one that floats your boat) again.
The Virgin TV Go app – a good thing?
In short, yes. The Virgin TV Go app lets you watch a range of boxes and up to 110 live TV channels on your mobile or tablet, anywhere with Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G or 5G, as long as you are in UK. You can also watch the things you have saved on your box on your phone or tablet.
The exact content you can watch depends on the TV package and you may find that you cannot get all the channels or content from your TV package on your phone or tablet.
Refer a friend
Do you enjoy Virgin TV and want to share the love? You can get £ 50 by referring a friend who then signs up. He also gets £ 50 off his first bill. You will both need to have a contract of 12 months or more.
The best ? You can make up to 25 referrals per month, which means many people could virtually cut their bills to zero by referring just one friend per month (you have friends, right?).
What add-ons are available with Virgin Media TV plans?
Add Sky Sports or Sky Cinema
You can add all Sky Sports channels, including HD and F1, and BT Sport to any Virgin TV deal, including its most basic plans. You can add sports just for one month at a time – perfect if you just want to see a particular tournament or sports match.
If you are not a sports fan, or even if you are, you can also add Sky Cinema. Virgin requires 30 days notice to remove premium channels / packs, so if you just want a channel for a month, you will need to give notice to cancel as soon as you get it.
Get blank movies on demand
Virgin Movies On Demand is paid per title. Once rented, content is available for 48 hours. There are hundreds of movies to choose from, many in HD. However, since you are paying per movie, big moviegoers will do well to subscribe to Sky Cinema or Netflix.
